RDS specification

IEC 62106 is the international RDS standard, now structured as multiple parts covering RDS, RDS2, RBDS, UECP, and public-domain ODAs.

The updated and re-structured IEC RDS standard version IEC 62106, published as Parts 1 to 6 plus Parts 9 and 10, can be purchased on the internet from the IEC webstore.

Enter into the search field the IEC reference 62106.

The updated RDS Technical Specifications submitted to the IEC as a draft for the new standard version IEC 62106, all parts and compiled into one document, are available for your own consultation as PDF R22/039_1.

The RDS Forum invites you to review it and send your observations back.

Note that you will need a password to open the PDF and you will not be able to print it on paper, for copyright reasons. You can get your password for free by requesting it by email.

Attention: IEC 62106-2 was updated in 2021; the RDS2 File Transfer protocol RFT was added.

There are two other parts that were added in 2021 to the RDS standard: Part 9 (RBDS) and Part 10 (UECP).

Part 6 was updated during 2022 and the new ODAs for RDS2 were added: Station logo, Slideshow, and IP Linking. There is also a new protocol to distribute RDS data over other bearers, such as IP.

Note that Parts 7 and 8 do not exist and are not planned either. The reason is that RBDS was initially planned as Part 7 and the UECP as Part 8, but the IEC decided not to use these part numbers and instead use Part 9 for RBDS and Part 10 for the UECP.
